From the 1600s to the early 1930s Portsmouth was something of a soap city, with two major manufacturers. A small soap factory, William Tilly and Son, was based in the area now known as Gunwharf Gate. While the larger Doudney and Company, makers of Dolphin Soap started from small beginnings in 1776 and achieved international fame for installing the UK’s first steam powered machinery into their Commercial Road premises. Southsea Bathing Hut are continuing that tradition.
